Airports
Pondering Theroux and other matters
31.01.2007
As much as I enjoy people watching at airports, it's still rather annoying as a whole. Due to the recent British Airways strike, I'm now traveling Delta to JFK, American to Heathrow, and British Airways to Seeb International. And my bags are theoretically going to arrive at the airport with me, after changing hands with three airlines. Riiiiiight. Anyways, I'm in Hopkins Airport in Cleveland right now, which is as enjoyable as a watching paint dry. JFK should be a little bit more interesting, as will Heathrow, and by the time I get to Seeb I'll either be to tired or excited to notice much.
Right now, I'm mostly just trying to recall lines from Theroux about how flying is as close to magic as somebody is ever going to get. That and time travel. It's certainly going to be weird to get on a plane with a foot of snow on the ground and step off in 80 degree weather. Therouz is definitely correct about how air travel takes the enjoyability out of traveling. People-watching aside; I'd prefer to take the slow boat to Arabia like Lawrence, or the bazaar railways like Theroux (once I get to London) rather then deal with the desensitized, hospital-like orderliness of the airport. The seats in Hopkins even look like the seats in the Cleveland Clinic. Alright, enough faux-intelligentsia ramblings. This post should help fill out the blog, look for more when I land.
